Scandal Point! The name itself suggests that there is something queer or mysterious about this place. Situated in Himachal Pradesh, this point is known by all those who have been to Shimla at some point of their life. Many believe it has been named after a romantic folklore. The story goes back to the British Ear in the year 1892. It was during this time that Bhupinder Singh, who was the Maharaja of Patiala of Patiala at that time, fell in love with viceroy’s daughter. If legends are to be believed, the king and the viceroy’s daughter eloped from this point way back in 1892. The king was later on banned from entering Shimla. The series of events lead to the king establishing a new capital for himself in Chail, which is around 45 km from Shimla. To be more precise, the intersection between the Ridge and Mall Road from where the elopement incident happened was named Scandal Point. However, if archives of Patiala palace and other palaces are taken into account, the facts suggests otherwise. As per records, if the said year 1892 is considered, the king was just one year old then. So the relevance of connecting him to the Scandal Point turns out to be baseless. It is believed that the Maharaja in question has to be Bhupinder’s father, Rajindra Singh. It is on record that Maharaja Rajindra Singh had an English wife. According to the facts she also had a son. But no one ever knew where the mother and son disappeared. Quite mysterious, ain't it.. If any locals reading this out, would appreciate more facts.
