Dating its history back to the colonial times, the Himachal State Museum was once the residence of Lord William Beresford, who was the Military Secretary of Lord William Bentick. When he left the country, the complex was occupied by Sir Edwin Colon and then it was inherited by the finance member of the council, Sir Edward Law. Later, after many years of independence, the mansion became the house of several Indian government officials. On January 26th, 1974, the house was finally converted into a museum with the sole aim of preserving the historical and archaeological artifacts. Since then, the museum collects a wide variety of heritage paintings, coins, photographs and sculptures which otherwise would have been extinct.

Extraordinary museum. Lots of history and heritage preserved here. Must visit. Decent amenities. Polite and helpful staff. This place needs more funding and upkeep. Spare a good 2-3 hours to cover it properly. Can be covered in a rush in

Nice place to visit. They will show you only 4 or 5 important rooms only. But these rooms are historic. You will definitely enjoy visiting here. If you have some knowledge of Indian history then it would be a great place to visit. Now this building is converted into Indian Institute of Advanced Study.

Truly wonderful for all the variety of things from not just Himachal but also other places. Genuine visitors need to give 4 to 5 hours to full appreciate everything. The old photographs from the British era are wonderful and the sections covering various aspects of Himachali culture are fantastically curated. Would have loved better guidance to negotiate the rooms though! Seems like a maze to most.
