Shakespeare and Company, the small, crumbling bookshop on Paris's Left Bank, may be the most famous bookstore in the world. At his pithiest, he called it “a socialist Utopia masquerading as a bookstore,” a bohemian rhapsody where visitors slept upstairs and red wine was served in empty tuna cans. Shakespeare and Company, arguably the most famous independent bookstore in the world, occupies a prime piece of real estate facing the Seine in Paris, not far from the Latin Quarter, Place Saint-Michel, and Boulevard Saint-Germain.There are reasons this English-language bookshop is a destination, far from Amazon.

Amazing experience! The most unique bookstore I have even encountered, full of small rooms overflowing with books. There are beds and chairs tucked among the shelves, giving you a place to sit and read or just enjoy the atmosphere in the store. Henry Miller called this place "a wonderland of books” and for a good reason. Bonus points for the live music from an local quartet on the top floor.

small but cozy, lovely library. Second floor has some pictures with the history of the place. That was quite interesting. They open a bit late on weekend, so please check the opening hours. There is cafe next to the boos store where you can warm up in cold weather.

This book store has so much character. Your mind goes wild as you walk through this old building. They have weekly readings and other interesting events. I always bring friends here. One of the best places to find a book for your trip. But be aware that this place is very very popular. At certain hours it's super crowded! I like to come here early in the morning or later in the evening. They have a cat that lives there and pretty much rules the upstairs. There is also a piano, so if your good you can entertain everyone. The café next door is amazing, but again it's super crowded during certain hours.

A bit crowded which makes it difficult to browse but that’s to be expected. Bought two books, and the staff was friendly enough. The rare book store beside it is worth a visit. Courteous bookseller with a good memory of his library. Asked for the Razor’s Edge and he reached for it without hesitation.

The place is so gorgeous, it ignited my passion for reading again! You have a whole range of classics, new books and poems to choose from. The place itself has a couple of floors and looks like a building straight out of a Harry Potter movie! There's an associated cafe nearby where you can grab a coffee and read your brand new book!
