The Great Banyan tree is believed to be at least 250 years old, and has been referenced in many travel books, going back to at least the nineteenth century. Early travel writers found it to be noteworthy due to its large size and its unusually high number of prop-trunks. It has survived two great cyclones in 1864 and 1867, when some of its main branches were broken. With its large number of aerial roots which grow from the branches and run vertically to the ground, The Great Banyan is said to appear more like a dense forest than as an individual tree.

This age old tree is a proud of the botanical garden. The authority here is doing very good job for protection and spread of the tree. As a result, the area of the tree has almost doubled in the past ten years. A rose garden has been started near the tree few days ago. Peaple not only from all over India but also from neighbouring countries come to visit this iconic tree. Still there are more scopes to beautify and protect the surrounding area.

The Great Baniyaan Tree..but general public is not allowed inside the premises that's the only problem. Otherwise it's a vast place for picnic...you can play games, play music click photo... though you have to pay 20 rupees to carry a camera inside the park but mobile camera is allowed. Nice place to hang around
