The Shaheed Minar (English: Martyrs' Monument), formerly known as the Ochterlony Monument, is a monument in Kolkata that was erected in 1828 in memory of Major-general Sir David Ochterlony, commander of the British East India Company, to commemorate both his successful defense of Delhi against the Marathas in 1804 and the victory of the East India Company’s armed forces over the Gurkhas in the Anglo-Nepalese War also known as the Gurkha War. The monument was constructed in his memory. It was designed by J. P. Parker.

Lovely place. This place is known as 'Shaheed Minar' This monument was built for those patriots who had sacrificed their lives to make India independent, to make us independent.... It is a good place to spend time with family and friends. There have many benches, where you can sit and sleep or enjoy reading books, magazines and newspapers.

Located at the very heart of Kolkata, the 158-foot high, pristine white Shaheed Minar has remained a landmark monument for over a century and a half. Its characteristic design and size has drawn the attention of many, including Mark Twain who dubbed it the ‘cloud kissing monument.’ However, the structure’s history remains just as interesting as its architecture.
