The fairytale kingdom of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan is home to a number of grand havelis. One of them having its own story to share is the ‘Nathmal Ki Haveli’. Nathmal Ki Haveli, often called the epitome of architectural splendour in the city, was constructed in 1885 by the then Prime Minister of the state Diwan Mohata Nathmal. It is an ethereal building with a very unusual tale to tell. The haveli was built by two Muslim architect brothers - Hathi & Lulu - who decided to split the construction in two parts, where one of them picked side A and another brother picked side B, so to say. Although both the segments were planned on paper to be identical but when the construction ?nally happened, it was seen that both parts of the mansion were similar in design, but not identical. Even though the two parts aren’t twin-like, there is no other building in the city that can overtake the ?nesse and detailing in the workmanship of this haveli.

This Haveli is an artwork. All the walls are filled with beautiful carvings and art. You are not allowed to up and explore. Only a small area near entrance is open for tourists to see that too is because of shopping. Haveli is huge and belonged to the Diwan of Jaisalmer. This Haveli tells the story of the kind of wealth Nathmal had.

This Haveli is still living haveli which means people are still living here. From outside, you will notice beautiful carvings on windows and balcony but from inside its very ugly. The owner hasn't maintained it properly.

There are a number of Havelis in Jaisalmer which feature different types of architecture like Rajputana and Islamic architecture. All the havelis are made using yellow sandstone and have beautifully carved facades and beautiful oriel windows. The beauty of these havelis is truly unmatched. The spectacular architecture of the havelis speaks of the creativity and innovation of craftsmen of those times. Of these, Nathmalji Ki Haveli is constructed by two Muslim brothers in the 19th century.

It is a private haveli so you can only see the front and inner courtyard. So many of these buildings have such be as beautiful stonework. I am amazed at the skill to do such fine work in sandstone
