The Story of Nahargarh Water harvesting structures is also the story of ingenuity of Rajasthan Society to innovate for all its needs. Built In 1734 years ago during the reign of Sawai Jai Singh (1698-1740), the extensive water systems of Nahargarh is one of the most significant features of the fort, which somehow does not receive attention that it deserves. The Catchment area of water for Nahargarh Extends to about 6 kms surrounding the fort. A Network of six closed catchments connect through small canals and aqueducts and drains are laid in and outside the fort. Small Canals bring rainwater from the higher reaches of the hills. The Bed of these canals is designed in such a way that it is on a gradient and also at the same time has an undulating course. Unlike, Water harvesting system of Fort Jaigarh, Nahargarh Has two large step wells (Baoli) and a smaller step well called as “Kund”. The stepwells receive water from the catchment in the surrounding hills while, the Kund receives rainwater harvested from the fort complex.

Everytime we visit Nahargarh fort, we find a new patch to discover! Its huge expanse makes it a great trek place within Jaipur city.. Also the view of the entire city from the top is so enticing! The historic beauty is endless!

On the Nahargarh fort this stepwell is very old. It was used to store water in earlier days. Few years back a complete restoration work is done. It is not so deep as other stepwells in Rajasthan. You can have a good view of Jaipur city from the adjoining fort wall. Good place to visit and enjoy. Parking available. You have to pay common parking fee and entrance fee to enter in Nahargarh fort. The fort is a must see spot in Jaipur and very popular among tourists. You can visit it any time as it is outside the fort.

The vestigial Stepwell which symbolises the historic past and its uselessness in the presence. It still is beautiful just for its picturesque value. The green algae bloom in the water contrasting against the yellow stones makes for a good picture. The steps on the well are not symmetrical w.r.t. some others. I would recommend visiting Panna meena ka kund, trust me it’s totally worth the trip and it’s closer to the city.
