A Geoheritage site. Only Stromatolite park in NE India in limestone host rock. Beautiful stromatolitic (algal) structures, boulder outcrops with circular structures at Mamley, Sikkim are preserved as nature’s amazing and exceptional creation. It provides one of the rare examples of early life on earth in Sikkim Himalayas. This dolomitic limestone belongs to Buxa Formation, Daling Group of Neoproterozoic age (1Ga old). lt is characterized by the presence of fine grained, fine laminated to massive, grey/ pink/ purple calcareous slates with quartz stringers which laterally grade into well jointed purple and grey limestone beds/ dolostone. Dolomite outcrops are as cliff, scarp faces and scatter boulders and often with a pitted surface and 'elephant skin' weathering. In Mamley area more than one generation of Stromatolite (conophytes) are distinctly evident. More such dolostones are observed near Tatapani, 20km further upstream of Rangit river. This Mamley stromatolite represent colony of Conophytons about one blllion year (Ga) ago, creating interest in the minds of common people about the early life on Mother Earth, the past geological processes, evolution of life on the earth and the palaeogeography and palaeoenvironment of the sequence. Mamley (1130-1140m above msl) is easily accessible by road, and is about 6 km NNE of Namchi, a well known tourist destination in South Sikkim. lt can be approached by Namch-Damthang-Wak-Sikkip State highways. The climate is also pleasant throughout the year, which will attract lots of tourists. Local Govt. has already started planning the infrastructural activities to protect it as Geoheritage site of about 16 acres area.
