On its first floor, there is Tibetan library that has one of the largest collections of Tibetan documents and literature in the world. However the center of attraction here is the majestic image of Manjushri ‘the Bodhisattva of knowledge’ that was brought from Tibet. The land on which the institute is built was donated by the late King of Sikkim Tashi Namgyal, because of which the institute bore its name. On 10 February 1957, the foundation stone of the institute was laid by the 14th Dalai Lama and was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India late. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 1 October 1958.

This institute was established in 1958.This institute has a museum to show the whole generation of evolving their culture with the great leaders who contributed to continue their ancestors motive. This place shows the history of "Sikkim" and it's people. The art and culture of "Tibetans" are shown here through their instruments, clothes, letters written in "Tibet language", paintings and much more. It also promotes the research on religion, history and language. Good place to know the history of "Sikkim" and charges are also minimal.

A great place to learn the history and culture of Tibet. You can see all the old coins, robes and other important stuff, well preserved manuscripts and texts in this museum. The museum itself is located in a peaceful atmosphere away from the city noise and one can truly enjoy the peaceful ambience.

if one is visiting north or even east/south sikkim, Gangtok sightseeing might seem bit dull for many. But one place not to skip is the namgyal institute. though small, but has rich collection of artifacts of Sikkim history coupled with beautiful surroundings and a small souvenir shop also. Some places are out of bounds for tourists though
