The Temple was built in 1782 by Lama Dorjey Rinzing and is perched atop the Observatory Hill in Darjeeling and is an amalgamation of Hindu and Buddhist religions. It is a unique religious site where both religions coexist harmoniously.the Mahakal temple offers one of most beautiful and curious religious observations. You will find a Hindu priest and a Buddhist monk sharing a common altar in perfect religious harmony here. Three shiva-lingas representing Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar are believed to have been manifested here.

Located at a hilltop at the centre of Darjeeling. You have to climb a steep hill from the mall chowrasta, the road is quite breathtaking. There are two main temple at the top. In a clear weather you can have a great view of the city from there. Elder people are advised to take several stops while climbing up the hill.

Far from disturbances and very calm. You will like this place not just because it's temple, in addition you will get peace and you can do meditation and also breath easy. Over and above it's decorated very colourfully which is an eye feast. Sit on the stands/benches with cool feeling in hot sun. Good time to visit is noon!

The temple is located on a hill higher than the Darjeeling. It is a very beautiful and peaceful location with lot of trees. Must visit if you are in Darjeeling. Loved it.

Completely sharing my own experience. I am not a religious person but I do belive in God and this is the place where I found ultimate peace , their chanting was mesmerizing. I will suggest you to visit this temple at least once. It is near Mahakal new market(walking distance)

This temple is not only calm and serene as it stands higher than local market level, but also provides an eye soothing view of the entire Darjeeling city. The sceneries are heart warming and the temple really calms your soul.
