Suan Pakkad Palace is a place to find visions of Thailand you thought long-since vanished in Bangkok. It's a well-tended tropical garden with serene ponds surrounding 8 traditional Thai houses, each of which brims to overflowing with fine arts, antiques and oddities belonging to Prince and Princess Chumbhot. In a spirit of sharing, they converted their traditional private residence to a museum back in 1952. Their philanthropic rationale was that, while treasured possessions are private property, they still constitute a part of mankind's heritage and should be made accessible to all. This jars slightly with the fact that what greets visitors first is an entirely unrelated addition built in 1996. The Chumbhot-Panthip Centre of Arts houses prehistoric Ban Chieng artefacts dating back to the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages. These rare items of painted pottery, bronze weapons and tools, attest to a Southeast Asian civilisation that equals Egypt and Stonehenge in terms of technological and social advancement.

Collection of central plains heritage houses in a peaceful garden setting. Eclectic collection of historic design and natural history objects. The museum section is imformative with important ceramics and other objects. Nice place to take time out and relax in the garden

It is for THB 100 and you'll see quite interesting collections from one of the Thailand first King's grandson. They will have 8 'houses' with full of antiques from all over Thailand and beyond. They even have seashell from all over the world. It's pretty beautiful Thai palace with its traditional wooden architecture. They have a house where it's next to the river as well. Beautiful.

A fine collection of traditional Thai Houses exhibiting various artifacts collected by a previous Prince. Perhaps my favourite house, though small, is the Lacquer pavilion. The gold on black lacquer depicting the life of Buddha and scenes from the Ramayana is exquisite. Initially I thought it wasn't possible to see the upper floors of these houses, but when you enter House one, you realise these other houses are connected via a walkway. You can sit on chairs on the balcony of house four, and relax looking over the garden and pool with it's tranquil fountain. A leaflet in English is available which has a good map of the site and information about each building. The area is surrounded by tall buildings and the BTS Skytrain towers just behind the site. Entry price is 100 Baht.

Great insight into Thai culture and history... a quiet gem of a place where traditional wooden Thai dwellings nestle within a lush garden beneath the BTS Sky Train. Definitely worth the visit for its archeological artifacts, historic musical instruments and ornate antique furniture.

Not really a palace but more of a compound of handsome teak houses filled with antiques and artifacts. Features the Ban Chiang civilization, with artifacts as old as 4000 years (prehistoric). There are royal collections of ornaments, shells, gemstones all displayed carefully in cabinets and houses. There is also a Khon section where there is a short Thai presentation of dolls. The collection is not as extensive as those in the National museum but the maintenance and display has this Old World charm. Probably not for you if you are not into history. Nice visit nevertheless.
