The Zaanse Schans is one of the most famous attractions in the Netherlands. Visitors come from all over the world to enjoy the typically Dutch mills, houses, and trades. The Zaanse Schans is located twenty minutes north of Amsterdam. Situated in typically Dutch surroundings, there is plenty to see and experience. Besides clog-making, there are a variety of other traditional skilled trades to admire. Take for example the pewter foundry De Tinkoepel which is one of the last of its kind in the Netherlands to produce a variety of pewter products by hand in the traditional way. Four of the nine working mills are open to the public. De Zoeker, an oil mill built in 1672, makes oil in the traditional way by grinding seeds and peanuts. De Kat, a dye mill built in 1646, is the only mill in the world to still process raw materials such as chalk and wood into pigment for the production of paints and dyes. This way of making paint was used in Rembrandt’s time.

Loved this place! Although tourist dominated, they manage to demonstrate the history and art of clog making in a genuine way. As it's free entry I recommend leaving a donation if you don't buy anything, definitely worth visiting!

A must visit place in Zaanse Schans. Small museum just for the history of World famous wooden shoes, called as "Clogs". Live demo of shoe making is also great spectacle to watch. (wait for sometime for a big grouo to gather, then they show the demo). The souvenir shop within, has a great collection and even sells real clogs. If space/weight is not an issue for you then do purchase a nice looking pair of Clogs. They are really comfortable! cheerful group of staff to help you with anything.

Visited this as a part of a tour. They showcased how they make the clogs (wooden shoes) with a quick demonstration and then that was it. They have a good collection of clogs and for sale. Prices are okay not very high as its a tourist heavy place.
