The Westbatterij is located on the west bank at the mouth of the Vecht in Muiden. In 1427, a fortification was already added to this place, which has been further expanded over time. The construction of the sea lock and the introduction of inundation as an important aid in the defense of the Netherlands in particular contributed greatly to the strengthening of Muiden. The current tower fort was built in 1852, but soon after completion it became militarily obsolete. After years of decline, it is now a site for a group of sea scouts.

The West Battery’s function was to support Muiderslot castle (reinforced with five bastions) in the defence of the estuary of the river Vecht with its sea sluices. The tower fort was built in 1852 to strengthen a battery built in 1799. The sluices date back to 1672 and were needed, amongst others things, to control the inundation (flooding) of the Old and New Dutch Waterline by the river Vecht.

It was a pretty little town. I rode from Amsterdam just to have a ride to somewhere else. I didn't stop for long. There was a small selection of bars/restaurants but all looked nice

Interesting fortress. The state is a bit unfortunate though. It seems there is not enough money available to perform the necessary maintenance.
